A few years ago, in the months leading up to the demise of Enron, companies and their marketing departments lived high-on-the-hog. They were allowed to spend their budgets and beef up their staffing levels freely, so opportunities were plentiful. When the dot-com bubble burst, it sparked what would ultimately become the collapse of the entire marketing infrastructure in the United States. Staffs were laid off in droves, job security evaporated, and CMOs and other marketing managers were forced to learn how to accomplish more with fewer resources.

Just as all of us were figuring out how to do that, something happened that no one really expected — at least no one expected it to happen as quickly as it did: The economy bounced back. The same businesses that were scaling back a few years ago are today focusing much more on their core competencies and holding themselves more accountable to the bottom line. They're leaner, meaner, and they're reporting record earnings and growth.

The problem, though, is that marketing departments are lagging behind this growth. Marketing is back in ramp-up mode, but CMOs are discovering that their departments aren't properly staffed to meet the demand. Outsourcing is one way to solve the demand problem in the short term, and by finding a vendor with a marketing approach that's strategic to the success of your business, a short-term relationship can become a long-term partnership.
