William B. Smith, Jr.
Principal Biography
Bill Smith is managing director and founder of Force 13 Marketing. He provides expertise in strategic marketing communications planning and execution. Smith has 15 years of strategic marketing experience in diverse industries, including online publishing, networking, telecommunications, consumer electronics and finance. An aggressive, results-oriented communicator, Smith is proficient in the planning and execution aspects of the marketing function, and is skilled in a broad variety of tactical disciplines, including advertising, corporate branding, product marketing, public relations, copywriting, and graphic design. Smith’s creative thinking has helped to position start-up Internet companies and Fortune 500 firms alike. Most recently, he was director of marketing at BoostWorks, a San Francisco-based manufacturer of data acceleration and traffic management software. Prior to BoostWorks, he directed advertiser marketing programs at TechRepublic and CNET Networks — online communities geared to information technology professionals. While at TechRepublic and later CNET, Smith launched more than two dozen new ad revenue products and developed several highly successful sales messaging strategies and campaigns — efforts that helped him to be recognized as TechRepublic’s sales and marketing person of the year in 2000. Prior to TechRepublic, Smith was manager of marketing communications at Digital Link Corporation, a Sunnyvale, Calif.-based manufacturer of wide-area network access devices, where he led the implementation of all marketing programs. From 1990 to 1996, Smith held marketing management positions at Ketchum Public Relations, Pinkerton Security and Investigation Services, and Great Western Financial Corporation, all in Los Angeles. Smith was a member of the team that received the Golden State Annual Report Platinum Award in 1993 and was a finalist for the Len S. Pinover Production Excellence Award from the Advertising Production Association of Los Angeles in 1995. He is a member of the International Association of Business Communicators and the Society for Internet Advancement, San Francisco. A Silicon Valley native, Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in advertising from San José State University. He lives in San José with his wife and three children.
